Cross the pond, more than 10 hours on a plane, enter a foreign country and continent … traveling to New York is much more than a simple trip. Take a look at these tips that are sure to come from scandal:

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR THE TRIP

- Carry a photocopy of the passport always and the original you should leave it at the hotel. Plus a copy in the email.

- In the places where they put “SUGGESTED PRICE X”, the price is “the will”.

- In case you want to close the suitcases, use padlocks approved by the TSA “the one in charge of the security of the airports” they have special keys to be able to open those locks.

- If traveling from CET timezone, six hours (or five if you travel in winter) you should delay the clock when you are in New York.

- In the United States, the environmental temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit, for each degree Celsius you will have to add 1.8 degrees to the Fahrenheit.

- They use miles: 1 Mile = 1.60 KM; 1 Meter = 3.2 Feet

- Think of pounds when you go to the market to buy. 1 Pound = 0.4 Kilograms

- The dollars are called “bucks”. Equivalences: penny = 1 cent; nickel = 5 cents; dime = 10 cents; quarter = 25 cents.

- If you have bought your trip in a travel agency you probably have a health insurance. If this is not your case (it was mine), you have two options: buy a separate medical insurance or trust that nothing will happen to you and in case it happens to you, to cover the expenses that were there at that moment (that they would not be cheap … Still, this is the option that I chose).

- There are several cameras located in Times Square. If you look at the bottom of each screen it tells you where it is located. For example, camera 4, of the most “used” is on the corner of 46th Street and Broadway.

- To travel to the USA it is necessary to apply for a visa and pay a fee (can be done online): https://spanish.madrid.usembassy.gov/es/visas/no-inmigrante/tipos.html

- On the plane they will give you the forms that you have to fill out and deliver to customs at your arrival:

The green leaf: form I-94W (one per person) is for passport control. It is a kind of data registry for the countries that are exempt from the visa. It is very important that the part you give to you, deliver it when checking in because it is the proof that you have left the country.

The white sheet (one per family) is for customs that to pass it previously you have had to collect the luggage.

When you arrive at the JFK you pass the passport control with the green leaf stuck in your passport. They take a picture of you, they take the print and a couple of questions (you tell them you’re coming from holidays and that’s it, the problem is if you want to stay there forever). Cut the bottom part of the green leaf and stick it or staple it to your passport so that you can deliver it when you leave the country, the rest of the green leaf is left. Pick up the luggage and pass in front of the customs officer to whom you give the white sheet. When you fill out the pages you have to enter an address in the USA (remember to have the address of the hotel / apartment where you will stay at hand).

- Plugs: The electric current in NYC is 110v against the Spanish 220v. The pins of the American plugs are flat. With the two is enough, but we must be careful not to insert the plug completely into the adapter: you have to take out a little the plugs of the plug of our charger and also that it is almost at a 45º angle towards the ground with Regarding the adapter that we have taken from Spain and is inserted into the wall socket. Play with him until the contact is continued. (In Primark they sell universal plugs with heads practically for everybody).

- City guides pick them up on Broadway, between 46 and 47 St. It’s called Times Square Visitors. One of the first visits we recommend is that of the NYC Tourist Office. At 810 7th Ave just minutes from Times Square, the NYC Visitors Center offers all kinds of information about the different events you can find in the city. Plans, restaurant guides and museums, the billboard of Broadway theaters… A good place to start your well-informed visit. In addition, from its website www.nycvisit.com, you can request the official guide of New York (in English) and send it to your home (in Spain for example) for free.

- As for the telephone, a fairly cheap option is to buy a phone card with data and thus be able to use data and make calls at a good price. Some time ago the best option was the DIAMOND brand, but probably there is more supply. They are bought at any street or stall bar.
